We were not able to sell our former home (bought 2005) in 2009 when we moved for work. We got a great price on the foreclosure/new house we bought in the new city, and the value of that property is up by 20%, but we took a bath on the old place. We're finally getting close to being out from under water on the mortgage but we bleed money on it every year. (It's rented but rent doesn't cover our costs.) We will sell next year when we finally have enough earned equity to cover the mortgage and closing costs at the market price, but that amount is still about $75k below break-even. [/quote]
