I guess I don't understand why this is such a big deal - I thought the only kids allowed to take Algebra in 7th grade are kids in AAP/Advanced Math anyway? So if these kids have already taken a combined 6th/7th grade math class and they get pass advanced on the 7th grade SOL, then clearly they're qualified to take Algebra? It's not like they're letting in other 6th graders from general education, right? It's still the same small group of kids who are eligible.
My middle school is no longer offering math 7 starting next year. Incoming students are being told it is open enrollment to algebra 1 if they’ve taken math 7, regardless of scores or success or recommendations. Math is now like every other subject: parents can put their child where they want them. YMMV. Principals have always had a lot of discretion in how they apply the rules.
Yeah I’m not buying this. What school? What do kids who only took regular grade 6 math take in 7th?
