What about Dawn Luedtke? Her husband is an elected official at the state level. Seems better equipped to fund and manage an effective campaign. No baggage…yet. Perhaps too soon?
She’s disappointed voters in the Olney/Brookeville area where a for-profit Florida-based company is locating a 16 bed residential treatment facility for high-needs addicts and mentally ill people next to a school (like on the actual border of the school). This oversized facility is sited between two SFHs. I wonder if she and her husband are beholden to developers or big businesses?
She’s trying to stop it though, correct?
Seems like the response has been, “Sorry, but the current zoning law allows this. Nothing we can do.” Lots of posts on the neighborhood FB groups, Nextdoor, etc. saying that folks have spoken with the county’s Planning office and what this FL-based, massive company is doing is leveraging a loophole by saying 2 houses on the property allows for 16+ residents. But apparently you can’t do that when you have 1 owner (1 owner = 8 residents). Regardless, this sort of facility doesn’t belong next to a school. The county should fix the problem. If Luedtke fixes this, then I will be the first to sing her praises. If she continues to say her hands are tied, then everyone in the Greenwood district (whose school and property values are impacted) won’t forget her lack of leadership and action. It’s a great test case for whether or not she is equipped to lead.
I am in the neighborhood too, and I agree with you about the facility, it does not belong next to the school. I already signed the petition. I remember when my boys were at greenwood how the balls would go into the mansion's yard all the time. I am disappointed to hear that Dawn Ludeke is just throwing up her hands. I hope she's working behind the scenes to prevent them from moving in.
Dawn Luedtke is just as much in the developers’ pockets as Friedson. They just take whatever the developers say as true and don’t think about it, so we keep making bad deals that enrich developers without resulting in a lot of development. YIMBYism, unfortunately, is more about litmus tests and signaling than it is about results. If I were all in with the local YIMBYs, there is no chance I’d support Friedson (or Leventhal or Riemer before him) for anything.
Mere YImBYs love Friendson and Glass.
