There has to be another mechanism for funding research.  Obviously there's private corporations doing research.   What kind of private foundations fund research and how do we get more money to them ?

Private research does almost zero primary research…it’s just not a feasible use of private funds to throw billions at say 10 different wild theories on how to create sustainable nuclear fusion.

A country needs to decide if primary research is in its best strategic interests or not.

Also private industry is often reverse engineered to justify profit.  Worked in the food industry for 20 years. Guess how many "doctors" on our payroll had research that corn syrup, food dyes, trans fats etc were "safe" or even "healthy". Similar to smoking.  I don't want to rely on private research for the future of my children.[/quote]
