The ex was with him when he "made it big" (got drafted). They moved to Buffalo and built a house there together.

However I don't get the sense they were really together for a decade nor that he "traded up." They met as teens but went to different colleges and it doesn't sound like they were solidly together for most of that time. NFL players are often strongly encourage/recommended (by other players and sometimes by agents and managers and people with the team) to lock things down with their college or high school girlfriend. It's part of the culture, similar to the military where people also tend to marry young. I think the thinking is that if you marry early she can set up your house and create a home life for you that will be a source of stability and consistency when you are traveling constantly during the season and have a lot of craziness in your work life.

So probably Allen was thinking along those lines with his ex but since it was only after he was drafted and moved to Buffalo that they actually lived together and were consistently in each others lives, that was likely the first real test of their compatibility. It sounds like things fell apart over a year ago for them and that he didn't start dating Steinfeld until after.

So it just doesn't sound like a situation where he strung her along and then traded up. It sounds like they got together young, played house and realized they were not compatible, and then they broke up and he found someone more compatible very quickly. Which yes would be a hard pill to swallow but she's like 28 not 38, if she really wants to get married and have kids then her time with Allen has cost her nothing. Now being an influencer who makes money by posting photos of herself in skimpy clothes is the real thing that is going to make it hard for her to find commitment. And it's likely this was part of what Allen ultimately decided he didn't want to be a part of.[/quote]
