In the book, the slippers are actually silver. If you watch closely in the new Wicked trailer they are silver. Glinda ends up handing them over as red.

That’s because MGM owns the rights to the red ruby slippers and they choose to change the color for the movie for contrast to the yellow brick road and thought it would be more memorable. During the broadway show musical they use silver shoes and shine a red light on them! It’s all about copyrights
