Dems are already making the same mistakes with regard to Trump. They will overexaggerate the risk, then when it fails to materialize they lose credibility. For example, we have been told that Trump is literally Hitler and a fascist. That he represents an existential threat to our republic...and this week Joe Biden announced that his administration is cooperating with a peaceful and smooth transition to the incoming Trump admin. For those keeping score, that means that Joe Biden is literally cooperating with handling over control of the executive branch to Hitler/Fascist. In what world does this make sense!?!?!?!?!? Who cooperates with Hitler/Fascist who is going to take down the country? It makes Biden look like a clown. Harris said there would be a peaceful handover of power (not to mention that at least of the two said they congratulated Trump on his victory).... Perhaps the core Democratic voter can square all of this. But many others cannot and it looks ridiculous. And I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Well, the Dem state level officials are already jockeying for 2028 positioning. How does one do that? Through fear. Newsom has already called a special legislative session complete with dramatic press event declaring his intention to protect Californians. NY AG James had a super serious, super stern and solemn press conference in front of an oversize official seal to declare she was already prepared to fight back against the Trump admin. And Pritzker is out there using dangerous, seditious language referring himself as a happy warrior and that the Trump admin will have to "come through" him to get to Illinois (apparently it took a senator from Illinois to save the union while a governor from Illinois is readying for civil war 2.0). And the media is already doing is scare campaign. The NYT https://www.nytimes.com/video/opinion/100000009811484/trump-worst-case.htmlwhere its OpEd contributors are spliced together speculating about what the very worst version of Trump 2.0 will look like. We're already reading stories that are carefully worded to scare people while using sneaky language to imply the worst (see the union "body blow" thread). I get it, I think. The core democratic constituency responds to this stuff. Perhaps it is even cathartic on some level. But why can't these people realize that to a certain percentage of the mostly middle section of voters this stuff comes off as ridiculous and unserious? And ultimately, when what Trump ends up of doing--while terrible and unacceptable--is not nearly as bad as what the prognosticators predicted, he ends up with a talking point about how he was unfairly accused of being terrible (instead of just sort of terrible). And, of course, a lot of people who voted for Trump will get their jollies from watching the dramatic overreactions (which many claim is the whole point of a Trump vote to begin with). Sometimes the best way to project strength is to just be cool in the face of adversity. Someone should clue the Dems into this.
Why should we pay attention to a MAGA idiot.
