The men I know who are extremely attractive compared to their wives are blessed with good genes. I'm thinking of one in particular. He's very active with a great metabolism, so he's not overweight. He's tall, and he's kept a thick mane of wavy hair that's turning grey at the temples. His wife has gained weight over the years and looks completely average. She won the lottery, because he appears to be a loyal spouse :-)

For the handsome woman/less handsome man combo, the women either have good genes and it doesn't take a lot of effort on their part to look like that, or they're slaving away with exercise and lasers and Botox and salon sessions and judiciously-cut clothes... and their husbands have put on weight and are in various stages of balding.

Middle age is interesting like that.
