For this to be true, you’d need either a massively expanding population AND no comparable increase in university slots OR everyone magically gets smarter and harder working in a generation. We have a moderately larger population but I’m skeptical that the pool of very qualified students (say, those who are ready to excel at college level work at top universities the moment they enter) is massively larger than it ever was.
