I got gel once on my fingernails and hated how it made them feel after I got it taken off. I just use regular polish now. Most of the time my fingernails don't have polish but I do think I look better when my nails are clipped and filed by someone other than myself. So I get manicures pretty regularly now. I get pedicures every 2-3 weeks (I live in a hot climate so am wearing sandals for most of the year). I feel and look better that way. I used to be really ashamed of my feet - and they hurt from ingrown toenails - but the pedicures have made a world of difference.

I used to go to a place staffed by American nail techs, so I didn't worry at all about the human rights issues. They shut down and now I go to a place with mostly immigrants - the woman I see is from Bulgaria and I see no indication that anyone at this place is there under duress. Maybe I wouldn't know, but it really doesn't seem that way. It's not a hole in the wall place that has a sketchy vibe, anyway.
