In my sister's case, in 1981, she started K at age 4, and turned 5 in December of that year. This was in MCPS, actually. I think we also saw many more K retentions back in the 70s-80s, probably with kids who would be red-shirted today. The current K cut-off is Sept. 1--I'm pretty sure "way back when" it was Dec. 31.
