This is interesting: https://ifstudies.org/blog/who-cheats-more-the-demographics-of-cheating-in-america#:~:text=also%20means%20infidelity.-,In%20general%2C%20men%20are%20more%20likely%20than%20women%20to%20cheat,gender%20gap%20varies%20by%20age. Basically it says women are more likely to cheat than men from ages 18-29. Then men are more likely. Which makes sense since women basically lose their physical appeal once they hit their 30s whereas men are more likely to age well (beer bellies and bald fellas notwithstanding).
I believe this statistic. Your rationale is logical as well. I believe the rate of women cheating is higher still, however. - women are more discreet than men; I dare say “smarter” - about this at least? So less likely to get caught, and - even on fully anonymous surveys, women are less likely to answer truthfully “yes” to the question of whether they have cheated. Because: - It’s embarrassing, - there is always a chance an anonymous survey will get hacked/ revealed, - women are socialized to view sex as bad but cheating far worse, etc. In sum, young women cheat a whole lot more than society understands.
From an evolutionary perspective, “caught” likely meant “dead” so the best liars who were cheaters besides probably had an advantage.
