I'm not a fan of these programs. They are just money makers. Better to spend time on an EC or at a job. My DD got into Ivy with a good old fashioned summer job.
It not about getting into a college, it's about learning more about a subject and getting a taste of what college can be like. Both my kids had summer jobs AND did a short pre-college program the summer before junior year. For both, it confirmed their interest in the subjects they now major in and helped demystify what it's like to live in a dorm with a random roommate. Less of an issue for my DD who has done sleepaway camp for a long time but really helpful for DS who is a homebody who hated the one time he tried sleepaway. Also, for DD I think it really helped her to see that there were other kids super passionate about the same thing she is, and that she'd likely find more of them in college. I have no idea if it helped with admissions (probably not) but neither was an Ivy-caliber student anyway. One's at a big state U and the other at a midrange LAC. But it helped their confidence and sense of direction going into junior year and was well worth the price for that. FWIW, DD's at Susquehanna was <$1k which I thought was very reasonable. DS did Georgetown and I think was $3Kish? Expensive for us but in the fairness balance between the kids, less than we'd spent over the years sending DD to the sleepaway camp he didn't want to do.
