additions I have not yet seen for the MD burbs - City of Greenbelt camps are very high quality for the money - we've been using them from ages 3-10 so far, and tried several. Adults teach the youngest kids, and teen counselors are well supervised (and seemingly well hired, by comparison with other camps.) We also tried Ancestral Knowledge camp - also in greenbelt right off the parkway. The kids basically muck around in the woods...so it's cool for an outdoor camp and they learn stuff like tracking, making shelters, camoflage, fire building, plant identification, making a bow and arrow, primitive pottery, bark baskets. My kids loved it. It's boy-heavy, but that worked out ok. It's low key, and they use knives. Super type-A helicopter parents would not enjoy it I would think. They don't hunt or anything, but it's implied by the other kids when they learn tracking that they might want to eat one if stranded in the wilderness - so that might be too much for some vegan kids. It's small, so drop off/pick up is nice and quiet. Later in the summer they also run overnight camps. Several University of Maryland camps are great (sports, bugs, terp quest, gymkana) and used by many people I know. One daughter did camp at Trapeze School of NY at the navy yard, which was good, but expensive without time to work more intensely on anything. We'd prefer classes for the money, but overall she rated it highly.
