For us, the big project in 6th was Model UN. The kids did a conference for a few days and even dressed up. etc. 
In 7th, it is National History Day. 
In 8th, they take the State test.

Back to refugee (my 8th grader is currently reading it). It's  a novel covering refugees from Nazi Germany, Cuba(90s), and Syria (modern). My kid actually ended up reading it a few years ago in 5th grade, so it's a repeat but still worth a read.

The class is suppose to challenge the students.  The book is just one piece of content.  It’s up to the teacher to make that relevant.  For example, The student could read Refugee, also read a news article about immigration today while also studying about Ellis island.  Then be given an assignment to debate for or against a specific legislation. [/quote]

It’s an enriched course meant for gifted and talented students. They should be selecting more ri go toys materials.[/quote]
