Slavery was important and sad, but despite the assertions of NHJ, slavery does not define the United States. I would use the book choices to focus on aspects of US history that are routinely shortchanged, including showing kids that historical events/trends do not have single causes.[/quote] Thousands of pages of textbook ad someone always get upset that some of them discuss slavery. Or union labor. Of woman's sufferage. Or the immigration acts. Or whatever. It all happened. Telling students that it happened is not the same as telling students how to think about it.[/quote]
