If the price were the same, broaden the horizon. Include Rice, WashU, NYU, Vandy, Duke, NU, U of ND...  For the same price, why not choose a school a whole notch above USC in a safer surroundings? [/quote]

That's same for UCLA.
Duke is definitely a level up overall.

Again depends on what you are getting into.
For Business, USC is better than Rice, Vandy, WashU, 
For CS, USC is better than Vandy, WashU, ND, NU, NYU
For Engineering, USC is better than Vandy, WashU, ND, NYU

Above may be true -:assuming the student survives the area. For those in the DMV area unfamiliar with Los Angeles, imagine USC smack in the middle of the worst part of DC or NYC. The student has to have a plan of weaving and dodging every time s/he has to leave or get back to the campus. Good luck.
