It does happen, but only because men go along with it.  They don’t have to.  They buy the pretty woman’s dinner because they know that if they don’t, there are 25 other guys lining up to take her out and treat her.

Less attractive women don’t really have those expectations or opportunities, but men want to date the hottest woman who’ll have them.
