I would love to know more about this. I searched the stepmom and didn't come up with anything. Are you talking about her mother? She died in 1997, seven years before Frederik and Mary married, so I don't understand how that would have led to estrangement.[/quote]

Perhaps PP is confusing the Danish royals with the Spanish royals.  Queen Letizia of Spain certainly appears to have a strained relationship with her (seemingly very difficult) mother-in-law (King Felipe's mother Sofia).[/quote]

Ironically, for probably similar reasons that Letizia and Sofia have friction. Frederik is his mother's favored child, and so is Felipe. Felipe seems to have at least avoided letting this turn him into a philandering wastrel, unlike Fred. But the same can't be said for his sisters. [/quote]
