I’m naive and thought they had the best marriage. I mean that speech she gave (in danish!) for his birthday where she called him a “mamil”…how do you fake that? And how he talked about her bravery when she lost her mom as a young woman Felt like a real love story. Maybe that insane mother in law was the tipping point that led to estrangement. And yes, I know I sound crazy but I’ve always connected with this couple!
I would love to know more about this. I searched the stepmom and didn't come up with anything. Are you talking about her mother? She died in 1997, seven years before Frederik and Mary married, so I don't understand how that would have led to estrangement.
Perhaps PP is confusing the Danish royals with the Spanish royals. Queen Letizia of Spain certainly appears to have a strained relationship with her (seemingly very difficult) mother-in-law (King Felipe's mother Sofia).
I certainly hope so! Queen Margrethe is my favorite royal by far, and I have only heard good things about her, so this came as a surprise to me.
Her other son Joachim probably would have a very different point of view for you to consider. So would her late henpecked husband Henrik. Ironically, for probably similar reasons that Letizia and Sofia have friction. Frederik is his mother's favored child, and so is Felipe. Felipe seems to have at least avoided letting this turn him into a philandering wastrel, unlike Fred. But the same can't be said for his sisters.
