My mom refused to leave the hospital following her mastectomy without full hair and makeup, a nice outfit, and nylons and heels. She was from another time…a time when Americans tried. Now it’s as though everyone has thrown in the towel. I’ve seen so many adults walking around in pajamas in public lately. Not even athleisure…legit pj’s. Does this happen in other countries?
Are you wearing a dress, nylons and heels to the doctor? Nah, didn't think so. Women were more objectified in your mother's time. That's not throwing in the towel--that's progress.
She most certainly dressed up to go to the doctor while battling cancer. Not a dress, but nice pants and a blouse or sweater. She never wore sneakers in public. I am a career woman, so I’m typically dressed professionally. I’d never wear athleisure to a medical appointment. I do full hair and makeup when I go to the doctor. Candidly, I think I get excellent service because of the way I dress and carry myself. Do I sometimes pop into Giant wearing athleisure? Sure. And I often regret it when I run into people I know. FWIW, the women I know who married well are physically fit and always dressed well. It’s almost like they adopted a 1950s housewife code that has served them well. Very well.
