Does it get annoying to have to drive so far every day, for activities, etc? I was hoping to live somewhere where the local schools are really a part of the community, but I'm afraid it will feel disconnected in TP. What has your experience been?

I live in Takoma Park and my son went to Blair. It's a 20 minute car ride. The biggest problem with Blair is that it is adjacent to the beltway and the air pollution over time is a health hazard.  For some reason, the issue of schools being located adjacent to interstates/major roads has not been controversial in MoCo. In California, it is highly controversial to locate schools next to interstates/major roads.
