Nobody is downplaying actual aggressions, which should obviously not be tolerated. But sometimes you are in a crowd and bump into someone. If that person is of a similar background as you, they probably assume you simply weren’t paying attention & everything is fine. But if they are of a different background from you, it’s possible they will brand the bump as a microaggression and assume you are a complete jerk, even though it’s likely (given the previous tiptoeing comment) that you simply weren’t paying attention. I’m aware that “bumping” is a simplistic example a microaggression, but if you substitute just about any other minor slight for the bumping, the pattern is similar.

There are many hucksters in the U.S. hoping to profit from hatred. Let’s not fall into their traps. [/quote
