As a 62-year-old retiree, I find that any drive of 8 hours or more is best spread over two days with a night in a hotel. But when you’re retired, presumably you have lots if time on your hands, so why not? Then you can do interesting things each travel day and maybe take the scenic route. It’s true that I don’t enjoy two-day drives if I know I’m going to turn around a few days later and do it all over again. So I would agree that an 8-hour drive is way to long for a long weekend.
OP said it is not an 8-hour drive, it is a 5-hour drive. The reason why it is 8 hours, apparently, is she and DH are known to put their child who has special needs in charge of his own packing, and do not bother to check that his—and I quote—“life-saving medical device” is packed. She also says they have to stop several times to stop their children’s nonstop screaming.
