We toured Wake earlier this week and I can’t figure out why it has become so competitive. Campus was built in the 50s and it has this fake old south feel to it. The new expansion part is a shuttle bus ride from campus so anyone interest in Stem will be forced to commute to some classes. Sports facilities are also a bus ride away. What is the point of being in an isolated campus but still having to take a bus to parts of campus? Everything seemed pretty generic and not all that unique. Our tour guide kept mentioning this danceathon fundraiser as a really unique Wake thing, completely oblivious to the the fact that it’s a pretty common fundraiser event. It was solidly a regional school back in the 90s and I would put it back in that category.
Sounds like it’s not for you and your kid but much of what you said here is misleading. The sports facilities, i.e. Student gym (which is brand new and gorgeous, nicest we saw anywhere including USC) and team training facilities are on the main campus, the football stadium is a short walk or, for those that are lazy, a shuttle ride away (not uncommon). The research labs and medical school are indeed in a brand new facility that is a short shuttle ride away, 10 minutes from the main quad. My premed kid is excited about these state of the art facilities and the opportunity to work on research with medical school faculty, but sounds like not a match for your kid. It’s true that Wake moved to this campus in the 1950s, so no buildings are older than that, but many are much newer, including the dorms. The architecture you call “fake southern” is known as Georgian and is common to many east coast universities. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Wake usually does pretty well in prettiest campus rankings. https://www.wunc.org/arts-culture/2017-03-22/wake-forest-u-named-most-beautiful-campus-in-nc
