There is no perfect coach for a middle school travel team, because the ideal resume is exactly what the NL coach has, and that inevitably comes with conflicts. (the new DCE coaches have similar resumes and will probably have similar conflicts). One alternative would be to have a Dad coach, who would have great attendance, but they bring a bunch of other issues. Or you could have a kid in his 20's who also would have good attendance, but typically don't have the maturity to manage a bunch of adolescents effectively. considering the alternatives, the NL coach is a pretty good one to have.
