If 1500 is 98th percentile, times 1.7 million test takers (in 2022, per google), then about 34,000 students have 1500+

NP: you made the common estimation mistake. You didn’t account for ACT scores or superscoring. The link that you provided is for one sitting. The 72,000 number comes from published reports from the Common app on how many students in the last application cycle applied to a school with a score of 1500 or above.
