Holmes Run Acres, Mantua, Hollin Hills, parts of Reston, and Lake Barcroft are all hidden gems with most of the region’s significant mid century modern and 70s-80s modern homes. So if you like that 20th century minimalist aesthetic those are your best bets. I’ve always been surprised that these neighborhoods aren’t more popular, but for the residents, these neighborhoods truly feel like an urban oasis. Lake Barcroft is very beautiful, but like the other neighborhoods, is surrounded by the most unattractive suburban sprawl. There are a some exceptions: The Moasic is a nice commercial neighborhood close to Holmes Run Acres. Lake Barcroft is not far from the attractive commercial areas in the City of Falls Church and Arlington. Hollin Hills is near Old Town Alexandria. Reston of course has the famed European inspired Lake Anne Plaza.
The above hood are "has beens" from the 1970s.
People pay a hefty premium for that aesthetic. And most of the homes were designed by locally famous architects. But they are often sold as-is so expect to pay for a thorough renovation respectful of the architectural style. New kitchens are easily 100-200k.
