I love it. Robert is a family name and I think Roberta is a nice feminine form and the nickname Bobbie is adorable. Everyone else in my family hates it (including DH and my uncle Robert) so obviously we’re not going to use it but I’m curious what everyone else thinks?
I don't like it. Seems lazy to slap on an A to make the name 'girly'
Have to agree. I knew someone who's best friend once was named Thomasina Waynette. Guess what her father's name was? Yep. Thomas Wayne and she was either the third or fourth (and last) girl in the family and he was like "d@mn it! I'm going to have a kid named after me one way or another". No kidding. This is in the south mind you.....her nickname was apparently Tommy which is cute, but still. Ugh. I feel for her.
This is a pet peeve of mine too. I'd never say this to someone who did it, but whenever I encounter girls who have been named after fathers/grandfathers by feminizing their male names, in my head I think "huh couldn't think of a single woman in your family to honor, okay." Maybe I'd feel differently if you EVER met a boy named after his mom, but you don't, so it grates.
I know plenty of boys named after (dead) female relatives. Quite common for Jews. Eg, Adrian for Adrienne, Pearl for Phillip, David for Dorothy etc. Also know the reverse, of course.
It’s still not common for boys to be named for female relatives, even among Jews. Also, you’re talking about a different naming tradition. Pearl is not a feminized Phillip (that would be Phillipa), David is not a masculine Dorothy. Yes, Jews often name for dead relatives but may simply use the initial or the meaning— especially when naming across genders, this tradition is sometimes interpreted loosely. This is different than naming a girl Roberta after Uncle Robert or Georgina after grandpa George. And it rarely works in the opposite direction— I’ve never met a little Emilio named for his grandmother Emilia, or a Samuel named for great Aunt Samantha.
