It seems that you co-opt your DH in your actions and pretend that he is in agreement (Hey MIL, Jim and I think that we should have our own Christmas party without family! Hey Best Friend, Jim and I have decided that you cannot bring a +1 to the friends reunion party we are throwing!) Anyways, these people know that you are the culprit and they attack you.
