DP.  I've done both because I used to get 1st/business for work.

I don't get it.  The plane arrives the exact same time.  I can buy all the food and booze I would for 1/1000 of the cost difference.  The seats are more comfortable, but it's not that big of a difference for me that I am willing to shell out so much for it.[/quote]

The lie flat makes a HUGE difference on the overnight flight, especially if you are the type who has trouble falling/staying asleep in economy (which I absolutely do).  If you can get a flight which leaves late at night, you can eat dinner in the lounge, then put the seat down right after takeoff and get 5-6 hours of sleep.  Makes a very big difference in being able to function the first day, adjust sleep schedules, etc.

On the daytime flight back, significantly less difference.  Although it's nice to take a 30 minute cat nap in the middle of the flight, makes it so you aren't totally dragging once you get home and have to throw together some food before you collapse into bed, etc.

And it's pretty much impossible to get free upgrades (or even upgrades with miles) into international business class unless you are a very high level elite on the airline.
