Are you people really serious about ES grades? They are almost always A for most kids unless there are serious learning disabilities. Even DD with ADHD got all A in ES, she is struggling a lot in MS now with C and D now
Teacher here. Grading has changed. Very common for bright kids to get As and Bs now. When I first started teaching in mcps (2006) bright kids got all As but we collected a lot less data and relied more on anecdotal notes and learning trends.
My daughter in 2nd grade has had all As overall for now, but has had Cs on individual assignments sprinkled here and there. In some cases the teacher seems to be strict "just because," like taking points off for "not explaining more" (though the directions didn't ask to explain, just to state something). Or she got a C on a "Science" assignment because the teacher didn't agree that someone that was clearly a habitat was a habitat. So it's obviously different in different schools and with different teachers. For instance, my 6th grader also never got the endless retakes that are often mentioned here. Some teachers allowed for some retakes, but it's highly teacher dependent and there are often a number of conditions on them. Obviously, if a teacher allows retakes and is less picky, it's easier to get As. I'm trying to train myself out of the expectation that my kids should get all As while still making sure that they do their best, ask their teachers for help etc. I do use things like MAP scores to track how they're doing (though I think the reading scores aren't super reliable in the early grades, but I can tell how their reading is.)
