I’ve lived here for 9 years and have never heard a politician say that. I’m gonna need some citations. Canek Aguirre definitely said it about 18 months ago. Then at the Return the SROs rally, Councilor Canek Aguirre said there was “no evidence of gang violence in the schools.” He then dismissed the impassioned pleas of Principal PreAnn Johnson and a parent of a child who was bullied and got in a fight. Even former T.C. Williams Principal John Porter has practically begged council to keep the SROs.
That is far from overwhelming evidence that a failure to acknowledge, as opposed to take steps to address, gang violence in the schools is an issue. Also, there is little gang violence at GWMS, but my child has been bullied and involved in a fight. I believe that the reason was their sexual orientation, though I have no way to prove this.
So you’re just like all the rest of them; deny deny deny, it doesn’t involve my kid, until it does. Last year a kid shot at Bradlee, stumbles into Duck Donuts, about 50 kids in parking lot but nobody saw nothing. Last June a kid is stabbed in the stomach and dies at Bradlee, a sophomore is charged with murder, students hold a candle light vigil where a reporter came and took their photos and the kids were flashing gang signs. School cancelled for the REST OF THE YEAR because school System afraid of gang on hand retaliation. This was definitely gang related, I used to drive a kid for an activity last year for a kid who who was in 6th at GW and had a brother at ACHS. His from El Salvador. He had videos of the stabbing, knew exactly what gangs were involved. This week a handgun confiscated from a student at Minnie Howard Also this week, a student was shot, killed and body dumped out of a car on S Reynolds (gang retaliation). Sure, your son has never seen it so it doesn’t exist, on repeat. Get your head out of the sand.
And the slashing at dismissal just yesterday. Add to this all the signs in the community of gang violence. The drive by on Martha Custis a few weeks ago. Oh and the shooting if someone in the face in the middle of the day on a Thursday. How about that “sudden death” near Potomac yards. It is ok to still love Alexandria, even with its mounting problems, but if denying reality will just make it worse. The police chief is on the record that our schools have a gang/crew problem. I swear us living in reality just have to continue pushing boulders up hills
