I just can't believe the level of paranoia that some people carry through life. Here's what I do when I leave for a long trip: 1. Throw out anything from the refrigerator and kitchen that will go bad and stink. 2. Empty the trash. 3. Pick up my suitcase and lock the door behind me.
Enjoy! And don't complain if you come home to a flood someday. I've asked every plumber we've used over the years, as a kind of test of this idea, and every single one said this when I asked what we should do before leaving home: Always turn off the main water to the house when you leave. Especially on a long trip. If there is a burst pipe (yes, it really does happen) or other plumbing issue and water starts to flow, it's going to keep replenishing and coming in the house and coming in the house from the main supply, and you'll have a flood. If you've never experienced what water does to every surface and material it touches, well, hope you never do have to experience it. But you do you, with your cool, easy exit! I'll just take the advice of all those plumbers instead and turn off the water (and drain the pipes, takes an extra five minutes at most) when I leave. It's no big deal. It's not "paranoia," it's peace of mind and will save a ton of money if anything does happen. Maybe you just like gambling....
