My very first experience with snorkeling was from a boat, near Key West in fact, and it was great, but my friend on the same trip struggled the whole time with his mask. I've since gone on many snorkeling trips and introduced many family and friends to it. I think for a novice, the appeal of snorkeling from shore is the ability to stand in the water and adjust the mask as needed. Many first timers don't feel comfortable breathing through a tube or don't know how to properly fit the mask, so they fiddle with the equipment before getting used to it. It's a lot easier doing that from the shore. My parents never got the hang of breathing through the tube, so I just got them swimming goggles and they were able to see lots of fish at Roatan, which is ideal for beginners. [/quote]
