Should DC absorb suburbs when it becomes a state? Seems like the district is having trouble enforcing residency requirements for agency heads and since most of the city workforce aka commuters lives in the suburbs?
No, just give DC back to Maryland. Problem solved.
Nobody wants Retrocession...nobody. Plus, you realize if DC goes back to MD, good luck ever electing a Republican governor again in Maryland. I don't think Republicans realize this at all.
I understand why retrocession was a nonstarter in the past when absorbing DC would have been a net cost to Maryland. DC is wealthier now and Maryland might be interested in that extra revenue. Retrocession also would strengthen the eastern side of Potomac’s position economically. DC and the Maryland burbs will continue to fall behind Va, but the story could be different if DC was part of Maryland. Retrocession is a loser politically. Two extra senators would be a huge prize to the democrats nationwide and I doubt they’d give up that possibility.
