NP here, I appreciate STA is a hard school to get into, but it is not impossible from some of the DC privates in middle school. Kids coming from the pipeline DC privates have a good shot.
There are far more kids that fall in the category you mention than spots at STA. It is about the number of spot available to non-siblings, non-"hook" applicants. It is not impossible, but highly unlikely. It is a very small school and a lot more applicants, many of whom would do very well there (even just from private middle schools in the area, to say nothing of the great applicants they get from public) apply for 7th and 9th than they can accommodate with spots, unfortunately. These days with the increase of number of applicants, be surprised your son gets in unless they are a recruited athlete type, URM, sibling, etc rather than otherwise, even if coming from private and a stellar applicant. "Easier" to get into for 7th than 9th usually, based on what I have seen over the years.
