By far, I have experienced the worst customer service at Pep Boys. Do not know much about their actual store - am referring to the Auto Repair dept. The so-called “mechanics” are sub par. I actually doubt any of them are trained mechanics…..they are just grease monkeys that carry wrenches. Every time I have taken my vehicle there >> they have ALWAYS tried to upsell me on extra services that I do not need. It seems they do this to everyone they service because I once sat in their waiting area & when customers would check out, the cashiers would always tell them that their vehicles needed this + this done. They also ruined my car the last time so I will never go back. Looking at their reviews on my local Yelp page, it is clear that I am in good company as many other people have had similar experiences as I have had.
My crappy mechanic story took place at Firestone on Georgia Ave in Wheaton. I ran over a nail a few years ago and took my car in to have it checked. Firestone said that the tire couldn't be patched, and I needed not only one but two new tires because they found a second nail in another tire. I am not savvy in the nail/tire industry and promptly authorized the two replacements. However, the tech couldn't find the tire unlock device (or whatever he called it). And he proposed just to yank the tires off. I said no, sir, and promptly picked my car up and took it to the dealership. The dealer not only said that the one tire COULD be patched for $15, but there was no second nail in the other tire. I was almost out of $300 due to lies and incompetence.
