But that doesn't mean that maintaining separate finances doesn't make it easier for a spouse to hide assets or engage in activities or buy things the other spouse wouldn't want them doing. In the case of a spouse bringing credit card debt into the marriage, for example -- credit card debt is irresponsible to begin with, so why would a spouse assume that adding to or not paying off the debt isn't continuing to happen if you don't know the spouse's finances?
