Look, we have a cordial (or so I thought) relationship with SIL. We are not [b]mean to each other[/b], we don't hang out with each other, it's always been like that. When we meet at family functions, there is little for us to talk about other than the kids and THAT'S OK. Do I really have to pick and choose friends at my age? [/quote]

You are missing the point.  Nobody, not even SIL apparently, is asking that you be closer or best friends.  What people are pointing out is that you have obvious disdain for her and think you are better than her.  That was evident from your first post.  It almost certainly comes through to SIL on those occasions that you do interact.  Be nicer, and maybe reflect on why you think you are better than others.[/quote]
