The construction of race is material in this case. If I, a black woman, were to claim that two white women had kidnapped me, I would probably be committed to an insane asylum. In this country women of color tend to be cast as kidnappers and white women as potential victims. We are assumed to be likely deviants and they are objects of desire whose innocence (Susan Green, anyone?) is presumed. What possible motive could two Hispanic women have for such a kidnapping?[/quote]

If having a dui then threatens to have your kids taken away and getting raped by broomstick was in your brain, you might lie to keep your kids.  While what Crystal did was wrong, it seemed fear-based, not bigotry based.[/quote]

The "You're Wrong About" podcast sums this case up really well in my opinion. The guest says more than once, "there are really no sympathetic people here." Despite the fact that the Duke Lacrosse team was exonerated, they were some vile POSs. They can be innocent of that crime, and the victim of a seriously messed up woman, and also beyond horrible human beings. Both of those are true. [/quote]
