As a former ER nurse, I have seen frostbite many times. All except one have been homeless. Those are the people who are at the greatest risk, not your kids who are bundled up and playing outside. And then can come in to a warm house when they are cold. I live in NH now and the wind chill is so severe they are taking the homeless off the streets and putting them in overstuffed centers because they will freeze to death if left on the streets. The one case that wasn't a drunk was someone who fell through the ice and took hours to seek treatment. If you bundle up properly and are smart about it, you'll be fine. If you're concerned about those who don't have proper clothing, there are organizations you can donate to or you can make packages and give them to the homeless.
+1 I will never understand people who freak out about childhood ailments that no one they know has ever encountered. If frostbite was a real danger to the middle and UMC (and just plain rich) people who frequent this site, you'd know people who have actually gotten it. I dare someone to cite a case of a child getting frostbite because of 20 degree weather who was not unhoused. Your suggestion to make packages for the homeless is a good one. I just remembered we have leftover blankets from the moving company that I understand retain heat incredibly well that I keep meaning to drop off with the shelter down the street. Thank you. Meanwhile, my kid wore some lined leggings and a pair of wool socks with her winter coat and a regular pair of sneakers this morning and is fine.
