This is a comfort issue. Some people are comfortable "baring all" -- i.e. joint accounts -- while others need to keep control of their stash. Personally, I would be uncomfortable if my partner felt the need to keep some money/spending to herself. I can't imagine "vetoing" or even questioning something she wanted to buy, or vice versa.
