Not sure what media you have in mind. I am a conservative who subscribes only to the Wall Street Journal. Masking kids in school, when community spread is high and adult vaccinations are low is a common sense mitigation measure (in addition to ventilation, moving PE class outside, etc). It is not kooky at all for Collins to recommend masking in Florida - with record breaking hospitalization numbers and increasing pediatric Covid admissions, 30 + a day now. It is unfortunate that adults did not get vaccinated when they were supposed to - before the Delta surge - so we could have protected kids, giving them a normal school year. This is not panic. It is realism.
+1000 Our school (Holy Spirit) sent a survey recently as well, asking whether or not we think masks should be mandatory or optional (I believe that was the wording). I put mandatory and hope that it the option the school goes with. Aside from being the safest option at this point, it also doesn't require the policing of vaccination status. We were very successful last year with the use of masks and distancing so I hope that those making this decision take that into account. Finally, fwiw, my child will be participating in some back to school activities within the school and has been instructed to wear a mask. I might be reading too much into it but this could be an indication that they are learning towards masks required for the upcoming school year.
