JFC. Yes, many teachers were posting non-anonymously about how returning in-person to school is inappropriate from a pedagogical standpoint or whatever and acting like Hogan was a monster for wanting schools to open. This was a real thing teachers did. They also repeatedly argued that learning loss is exaggerated and that kids are resilient. Now you're concerned about the consequences of keeping kids out of school for over a year? NOW???? YOU USED OUR CHILDREN AS A BARGAINING CHIP. I'm sorry next year will be difficult but you made your bed.
Do you think all teachers think the same way? This is confusing to me. You praise a DC teacher for being willing to go into schools, yet many MCPS teachers were also willing to go into schools. There are still DC schools that are not even in person, yet they are all amazing? Teachers are a large group who don't all feel the same way. For you to condemn them all is insane to me. However, on the topic of summer school. Plenty of teachers did not work summer school in past years because they also wanted a break. Is that horrible? Or is it only horrible this year? Every person with a contract position is allowed to do whatever they would like when their contract is over. Teachers get to decide what is best for themselves and their families. You do not get to make that decision for them.
Teachers are part of a union that purports to represent their interests and clearly showed where they stood on this issue. I saw NO teachers publicly advocate for school re-opening, ALL I saw was gaslighting and attacking parents WHO WERE AND CONTINUE TO FACE A MASSIVE CHILD CARE CRISIS. Teachers showed zero compassion for parents, ZERO. I saw this on both anonymous and non-anonymous forums. You don't want to work summer school? Fine. That's obviously your choice. Don't expect me to feel sorry for you though.
Like all good playground arguments, parents had nothing but nasty things to say about teachers. In reality, it was a crappy situation that both parents and teachers felt angry, overwhelmed, and unsupported in. They then turned on each other because that was easy. I just hope everyone can take a step back and realize we all have the same basic goal, educating children to be productive citizens. Blame is easy but moving forward will be hard.
Of course teachers want people to forget how anti-education they are. How can they justify demanding increased funding for schools when they spent the past year insisting in-person schooling is unimportant?
