At DS’s school the K and 1st teachers are staying home (I’m assuming with ADAs, no clue) and teaching virtually. The kids will be glued to laptops at school with Interventionists supervising them and unable to meet with their own small groups. It’s a ridiculous plan.
That is really lame. I can’t believe all the teachers have legit excuses.
ADA eligibility isn’t easy to get. You have to prove that you have a medical disability. I teach in a different district and have a seriously impaired immune system due to cancer treatments. I had to submit over two months of test results and a letter from my doctor. And just because you are found to be disabled, doesn’t mean that you will get the accommodation. I was refused on the grounds that it would be too difficult for my school to operate. The form letter from my district clearly stated a) yes, you are disabled and b) no, you can’t work from home. Within two weeks, I took leave and my insurance started sending me short term disability payments. There’s a sub in my classroom for the 5 or 6 students per class who chose to return in person for socialization. The 15-20 students per class period that chose to stay virtual now have someone who doesn’t know them or the curriculum. It’s true that in a normal year, I would have taken leave anyway. However, this was an opportunity to disrupt kids’ lives much less. My bank account isn’t hurting thanks to my insurance, but my heart is breaking for the kids sitting at home watching a clueless sub in the classroom with 5 students.
