You need to ask yourself - do you want to be “right”, or do you want to maintain a relationship with them? If you want a relationship, listen to what they have to say with kindness, compassion, and empathy. It doesn’t mean you need to self-flagellate for being racist or anything, just listen to their point of view and experience without getting defensive or arguing.

When the costume issue was brought up, instead of going silent and then watching the family gang up on them, you could have listened to what they had to say.
