Side note:  My drunk Uncle Roy ran into a pillar at our wedding and had to be carried out by paramedics.  We did our first dance with blood on the floor!

My great Uncle Roy was a great guy who was happily married for 70 years and died at age 95.  [b]A bad association in your family isn't a bad association in everyone's family.  I guarantee you can find someone who had both a great life and a terrible life for every name[/b] (I mean there are obvious historical exceptions).

Similarly just because you knew an Amanda or Julie in high school.who was mean doesn't mean your dentist's cousin's former roommate can't name their kid Amanda or whatever.

This is true, but I do think it needs to be honored.  My father had a REALLY MEAN girl named Victoria in his grade, small school, small town, they were in the same class from Grades 1 to 6, then same middle and high school.  He has a knee-jerk reaction to the name Victoria.  Alternatively, he LOVES the name Veronica because he had a crush on a Veronica all of his elementary school years.  if you say the name Veronica he gets a little smile, even at 84 years and married 55+ years to my mother, who is the love of his life.
