But in our family, kids get financial limits on college, we approve colleges that go on the list (we’ve never disapproved of one, and one went on with an: it’s a safety and we are only paying for it if you have no other option). We do a financial breakdown of the options with the kid. We are glad to be sounding boards. But the decision is the kids. As such, you respect that the timing and manner of announcement are the kid’s and you try not let your ego get too wrapped up in their college choice. It’s like posting: I’m going to be a grandma! You don’t do it when DD is 5 weeks pregnant and calls you. You do it when she’s ready to make the pregnancy public, if she is comfortable with it. Same deal with college. You can’t expect your kid to act like an adult if you don’t treat them like one. [/quote]
