I have one in private and one in public, and your reaction is just... horrid. DC in private was in person until last week. Now they are virtual until after christmas break. I am very comfortable with this plan, and certainly don't regret the tuition money. We knew when they opened in Sept that they would probably need to shut down come winter time. That was totally fine and expected. In the meantime, he got 2 and a half months of in person school, to build relationships, learn routines, establish expectations, etc. His virtual transition has been pretty seamless. I SO with the public schools had allowed kids to go in person for even just a month in September, while the weather was nice and cases were low. Those relationship and expectations that would have been built in person would have been invaluable.
We are in a similar position, with one in public and one in private. I find it interesting that there are so many public school teachers complaining about students not logging in or parents not being responsive. My kids log in and participate with DL, but once the private school student had a chance to go in person to meet the teachers and develop a relationship, the level of engagement improved tremendously. As she described it, she just felt more connected to the teacher, which lead to her being more engaged during both in person and DL days. That personal connection makes a difference.
