Sorry to be imprecise - I did not mean to imply Arlington overcharges at all, just that they would be a stock with little upside since they are at the top right now - that's all. On ECNL, no doubt they are better than CCL, but the local teams playing in ECNL (other than VDA and Arlington) are not better than other top teams in this area in the U13-15 range, including SYC. Hope to see Arlington and VDA in MLS Next. Probably not both but at least one of them.
Rumor is that Arlington will put their Academy Teams into MLS Next and their Red Teams to take their ECNL slots next year.
Not gonna lie I stopped at “rumor is”
Arlington's U13 team is currently in the 10th place in ECNL. It is certainly not the cream de la creme relative to its ECNL competition.
Yes, but (1) That is probably Arlington's weakest team. (2) U13 seems to be a group where the VA teams are actually quite strong. (3) ECNL would presumably make the decision based on all of Arlington's teams - not just the weakest one. So, ignoring U19 as it wll have aged out, Arlington is currently 1st, 3rd, 3rd, and 6th at the other age groups. (4) Even that is to some degree irrelevant, as presumably it is the performance of the second teams which would matter for this decision. So in CCL, you have the following standings for U12 through U17: 3rd, 10th, 10th, 11th, 8th, 14th. If ECNL is a stronger league then (4) would suggest that Arlington won't (or at least shouldn't) get its second teams accepted into ECNL. I'm not sure that this is the case though - anybody have a good feel for the relative strength of the mid-Atlantic ECNL teams vs CCL?
I think the Red Team point is a good one (you have to be careful about standings because there are variances in how many matches certain clubs have played). Putting that aside, I don't think there is any question that Arlington Red teams in CCL would be competitive vs BRYC or McLean U13-16, and perhaps even some Loudoun teams. I think you also need to consider that they will also divert kids who might go to BRYC or Arlington by having more roster space available for kids who might have been forced to go elsewhere.
I am sure that ECNL is happy to have Arlington's top teams, but I don't think that Red teams will be competitive against ECNL teams. Arlington U14 Red lost to Alexandria 1-4. Arlington U15 Red lost to Alexandria 0-5. Why would ECNL want Arlington's B teams, which are not particularly competitive against good non-ECNL clubs, like Alexandria?
The Alexandria U14 team that you are referencing plays MLS league, they wouldn't go to ECNL. The U15 won state cup 2 years ago and probably would have won last year but competition was cancelled due to covid. I wouldn't be surprised if Alexandria also received MLS for this team next year at U16.
Players are already leaving. Sure, maybe MLS but definitely not State Cup champs this year.
Fair enough - U15 had players leave for DCU, as may U14. That is part of the MLS Next vision, though quite obviously DCU will take the best regardless of club of origin.
Exactly. Alexandria would remain in MLS and not consider ECNL which is a level below. I think both Alexandria and SYC will benefit from being in MLS by attracting players at an earlier age which can then funnel up to DC United once at the appropriate age to join their academy. Arlington will benefit in the same way if they join MLS but that would leave 3 clubs in extremely close proximity.
Does SYC and Alex have better programs for boys soccer than girls? How/what do their top girls teams do?
